Last week, the International Garlic Congress took place in La Alberca de Záncara (Cuenca, Spain), attended by Fernando Hernández, territorial representative of Futureco Bioscience.
At the conference, different lectures were presented on the cultivation of garlic: From agronomic measures and recommendations for their cultivation (planting, management and harvesting) to storage (post harvest), passing through its commercialization and the future prospects of this crop in reference to its varieties, quality and markets.
Regarding its cultivation, the problems associated with the choice of variety, the development of the plant in the field and the problems in the conservation of the product once collected were highlighted. As for pathologies or diseases, the main problems of garlic cultivation are, mainly: The nematode Ditylenchus dipsaci; Fungi that cause green rot (Penicillium alli), rot of garlic (Fusarium proliferatum) or Roya (Puccinia porri); viruses as the mosaic virus and sadness of garlic, and as for bacterial diseases, the soft rot caused by Erwinia carotovora. There was also a conference about the physiopathy of the waxy palsy.
